The cervical vertebrae are unique in that they have blood vessels running through them that supply blood
to the brain. When there is a problem in the alignment of these vertebrae, the arteries can become occluded or irritated.
If the blood supply to the brain is decreased, a headache may follow. The first cervical vertebrae
(called the atlas) can also exert pressure on the brain stem which can lead to several symptoms including headaches.
Head forward posture is often found in people who suffer from headaches.
When the cervical spine loses the normal curve, tremendous stress is put on the joints, muscles and blood vessels.
This disruption leads to decreased disc space, nerve irritation, muscle atrophy and spasm and eventually
arthritis.
The normal curve in the cervical spine keeps the ear above the shoulder. If a
straight line is drawn through the center of each vertebrae they should converge behind the curve.
Chiropractic care can help restore this normal curve which not only will reduce discomfort but will
reduce degeneration associated with dysfunctional movement.
